Massage Therapy Regulation & Licensing in the UK

UK Qualifications (not government regulated)

The Institute of Sport & Remedial Massage (ISRM) of London, qualifications for membership are graduation from one of 2 types of institutions one being Accredited Courses and the other is Validated Courses.  Accredited Courses are at schools which run their own qualification, with their own external validation, to an appropriate level, with a set of Learning Outcomes. Validated Courses  operate at independent schools which run the under our BTEC validation process, BTEC this is the UK licensing body to become a licensed institution. The institute works closely with all schools to ensure high standards are consistent and to share ideas so together we can further develop training standards. In London the

General Council for Massage Therapy (GCMT ) Membership requires proof of a minimum  145 hours core curriculum.

The British Federation of Massage Practitioners (BFMP) of Preston, Lancashire no listed requirements for membership.

The British Massage Therapy Council (BMTC) of Oxford membership has an agreed standard of training supported by structure of assessment.

Scottish Massage Therapists Organisation (SMTO) of Aberdeen , minimum standard of training is 120 hours  and a diploma from a recognised institution.

Irish Massage Therapist Association Galway, Ireland is an associate member of the (SMTO) minimum standard of training is 120 hours and a diploma from a recognised institution.

London & Counties Society of Physiologists (LCSP) of Lowerstoft Blackpool a Register of Remedial Masseurs no listed requirements for membership.
