What is Women's Power Cocktail Hour?

Like all good things, four women were at an event at a bar, and started talking about the F*word – yes, feminism.  We wondered if we could get 20 women and men to attend an event to talk about it.  Our first event attracted over 70 women and men, and we ended up with 2 pages of potential topics for future events!

Two of the original four women are volunteering their time to ensure that the events continue.  The Women’s Future Fund is our administrative partner.

We want to do 3 events each year in Toronto on a variety of feminist topics.  We want it to be fun, entertaining, bring community and business and labour together.

Our guiding philosophy for discussion is that those who are in the room are the people who are supposed to be there that night!  No monthly commitments, no guilt if you cannot make it, no exams or marks!

We are setting up as a not-for-profit and trademarking our name in Canada and the U.S. so that we protect the feminist dialogue and content!

Our vision is to get everyone in Canada talking about feminism!

We believe it is important to have feminist dialogue and discussion in public places.  We want both women and men to attend [we ask only that men honour the woman-positive and inclusive nature of the events].  We believe that childcare is important to offer so that all women can participate.  We value diversity in all its forms.  We want to hear the personal stories of our panel members – how and why they became activists.  We want to provide a venue where feminist organizations in our community can participate too.

We hope to hear from you!

Anne Perera

Anne is an RMT and a long-time supporter of women's issues. A social and environmental activist, Anne feels, “Expanding our individual universe in conversation and following this with action often catapults us forward into what is new. Simply the discovery of a new view or approach can make an arduous task to a joyous one. What was inside, perhaps hidden or covered can then be revealed, reinterpreted with changed eyes and hands or seen through experiences of others sharing their worlds’ makes life simply rich with possibilities.” WPCH came about in this very way.

An invitation brought the conversation back to life for me, the feminist conversation. Jan invited me to a new evening discussion session in our hood. We understood though incorrectly that it was a table discussion about current events. Discovering on closer inspection that that was not what we had hoped would be the case, Jan and I began asking if others if they would join us in our new feminist current event idea and a WPCH was born.

I welcome you to come join us to see and be part of the network of ideas and experiences at the Woman’s Power Cocktail Hour!
